Today, Vordering and our subsidiaries are launching Planet First, our commitment to tomorrow. The science is clear – we must halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by no later than 2050 to avoid the worst effects of climate change.
We're proud to be part of a sector which is taking its responsibilities to safeguard our planet seriously. The cultural and creative sector is not only a huge contributor to the British economy; it's also a leading contributor in the creation of a future that protects the planet and sustains everyone, everywhere.
We know that it's important for us to take responsibility for the impact we have on the environment, but we also know that it's going to take a wider coalition to make the kind of difference we need. That's why we've joined three leading organisations which are sharing resources - two in the creative industries and one made up of small and medium businesses across the world.
Culture Declares Emergency is an international movement of individuals and organisations in the cultural sector declaring climate and ecological emergency. Since it launched in April 2019, over 1,500 declarers have signed the declaration that the Earth's life-supporting systems are in imminent jeopardy, threatening human civilisation and the biodiversity it depends upon. The declarers are united in our belief thatscience needs to be acted on urgently and the culture connects, inspires and determines our values, frames and behaviours, therefore a transformation of society has to be pioneered by cultural generators.
Staging Change developed from the #SustainableFringe campaign at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2018 and launched in February 2019. It's working to create a theatre industry that has a small footprint but a big impact. As storytellers we have a unique capacity to explore issues with audiences on and off stage. This means taking leadership in communicating the importance of environmental action, whether through the content we produce of the sharing of our practice.
The SME Climate Hub is a pioneering global initiative that aims to create a tipping point for mainstreaming climate action and building business resilience. SMEs represent 90% of business globally, employing 2 billion people worldwide. The SME Climate Hub is an initiative of the International Chamber of Commerce, the Exponential Roadmap Initiative, the We Mean Business coalition and the United Nations Race to Zero campaign which exists to support the millions of SMEs as they commit to halve greenhouse gas emissions before 2030, and race to net-zero emissions before 2050. This Hub is an exercise in radical collaboration that opens the doors for SMEs to join the United Nations Race to Zero campaign — an international campaign that brings together an unprecedented coalition of businesses and governments committed to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Joining these networks is the first step for us. This is an ongoing commitment and over the coming months we're going to be putting our Planet First plan into action. We're going to be assessing our processes and suppliers and taking the action we need to fulfil our promise to you, the planet, and tomorrow.
